Our Story
Val’s Barkery started out of tragedy. In the late fall of 2018 Jordan’s best friend and what would now be considered emotional support dog Tequila Rose got sick. At first it was a lump on her chest that was non-cancerous. Then it was a infection in her uterus requiring emergency surgery. Then it was, what we assume, a staph infection from the uterus removal surgery. Then from the stress of it all, the previously non cancerous lump was cancerous and spreading fast. The worst decision a pet parent can make was made, to let our best friend free from the constant immobilizing pain she was in to go over the rainbow bridge (I am crying writing this).
Tiki was our best friend and the smartest most amazing dog either of us have ever met. We had over 100 words for walk and even hand signals and she knew them all. When Brittany first met Tiki, Tiki hazed her by consitently shaking water on her to try and chase her away, which made Brittany even more determined to befriend this doggo.
After Tiki’s passing we searched for answer to why she was taken from our life so early. Brittany began to discover the world of recalls on pet food, including some of the most heavily advertised “best” brands. The connections between large sums of money donated to vet schools and vets’ “approved” dog food brands. As well as the overall lack of oversight, regulation, and consistency on “FDA Approved” dog food and treats. It began to make her question everything about the pet products industry.
A few years later when she got Valory, Brittany was terrified to buy any brand of food or treat and began religiously researching each and every ingredient in foods and treats. What she can tell you from all her research is that there are no great options on the market. So she began to make her own treats (something Valory consumes in large amounts as we spoil her rotten). Valory loved all of them and shared with many of her friends and family who also loved them, and thus we began to sell them.
As Val’s Barkery grows we hope to become large enough to influence change. Part of the reason we chose to put Valory on the label is to bring positive association with pitbulls (the other part is that she is so stinking cute!). Pitbulls are a group of dog breeds (there are many breeds that fall under the pitbull nomenclature) that are unfairly discriminated against. They are discriminated in public with people saying things like “keep your dangerous dog away from me”, they are discriminated against at pet stores with companies not allowing them to participate in puppy socialization classes, home and rental insurances deeming them “dangerous” and not insuring someone’s home because of the pup, or landlords not renting to people who have pitbulls, to entire cities banning the ownership of them.
We find this discrimination deplorable! People who have actually interacted with a well socialized Pitbull will tell you things like they are couch potatoes, they are so friendly, they just want to lick your face, they are cuddly couch hippos. Our little Valory seems to be the representation of all of these traits. She literally gets out of bed about an hour after her parents. She never barks at other dogs and the few times she has been attacked by other dogs she tries to climb Jordan like a tree and needs hugs and love before she will calm down. She wants to say hello to every human, to the point where if a neighbor says hello to her even once we have to wait outside their house on the next walk for at least 5 minutes to make sure they aren’t going to come out again. About as aggressive as Valory gets is when she wants to lick her family members face, she will pin us down and lick our face and she is over half of Brittany’s weight… (we could train this out but dang it is nice to be loved so thoroughly).
To make a long story short, while we don’t make much selling dog treats, what we are selling is love for all pets, security knowing that what is on the label is every ingredient in the treat and no nasty preservatives or unpronounceable chemical compounds, and you are supporting a small business as well as a dream to end breed discrimination.
Meet the Family
Mom
Brittany
Brittany is the treat maker who puts love and attention into every single treat made.
After going down the “what is that ingredient” rabbit hole she couldn’t stand to buy sub par treats for her babies. So she started Val’s Barkery. She has a very deep spot for the pibble cause and animal rights in general.
Dad
Jordan
Jordan is the resident Snow White. He is an animal whisperer. His relationship with Tequila Rose truly was the definition of Man and his Best Friend. They had an unspoken bond and way of communicating that was something else. He is not just good with dogs though, he was the one that built up Ella’s trust so that we could get her inside; and he has saved countless birds for Ocelot’s murder mittens to the point where birds sing him awake every morning as a thank you for saving their lives.
At Val’s Barkery, he is the social media manager, picture taker extraordinare, idea generator, human treat tester (yes he has eaten every single treat and gave his feedback), and much more.
The Babies
Valory
Valory: after Tiki passed Jordan and Brittany grieved for a long time. About a year and a half later Brittany couldn’t stand the lonely nights (human cuddles aren’t the same as dog cuddles) and the low energy in the house. Brittany missed Tiki very deeply but felt the hole wasn’t healing with the constant reminder of loss. She began pestering Jordan with numerous pitties available for adoption. A few months went by of Jordan being luke-warm (he still missed his best friend) when Brittany threw down the gauntlet. She said, Jordan there is a litter of pitty pups 4 hours away, I want a puppy. They agreed the blue nose girl pup was adorable, paid the deposit, told the boss Jordan was taking the day off, went and got all the puppy toys and materials needed and the next day made the long drive.
Upon arrival 6 little pitties about 9 weeks old greeted us with love and excitement. They had agreed that they both liked the silver colored pibbles and had even put down a deposit on one. Jordan said it was Britt’s choice. Within minutes Brittany found the itty bitty brindle colored runt. Once she picked it up, it was over. She didn’t realize it, 1 hour of playing with pups and Jordan showing Brittany each of the pups, she never put the bridle colored runt down. It was decided that was the one.
4 hours of driving later, Valory was introduced to her new home and sisters (Ella and Ocelot). Brittany is terrible at choosing a name so Jordan began playing music to see what the little pup responded to. After awhile Valerie by Steve Winwood came on and little Val snapped her head up and turning her head from side to side. It was decided she would be called Valory after the song but changed spelling for fun (her parents are millennials after all).
Ocelot
Ocelot, Aka Baby Dragon is the oldest of the babies. She made her way into the family in a round about sort of way. Brittany was working one morning when a customer came running in saying “I hit this thing and I have a meeting, here!” and a 4-10 week old emaciated street cat that had a bleeding snoot was handed over. Brittany, enamored by its cuteness texted Jordan a picture of the itty bitty kitty and said “Can I Haz”? Jordan quickly responded OMG its HURT ITS BLEEDING, WHAT ARE YOU DOING, TAKE IT TO THE VET!!! And thus baby Lolo joined the family.
Her transition from street cat to baby dragon went over swimmingly. Especially since the 50 lb Dog was terrified of her (Tequila Rose), Lolo quickly discovered she was the boss and if doing anything bad like stealing raw chicken from mum, she just had to turn on the cute and flash the messed up nose and boom she got what she wanted.
Tequila Rose was initially terrified of the 6oz sharp on five sides creature. Ocelot could bully the 50 pound dog into doing just about anything. This went on for about 6 months. One day it was horrifically cold, Brittany was having a hard time keeping the house warm enough (concrete apartment with nothing but space heaters). Brittany was huddled under a blanket doing homework when she looked over and discovered that Tiki and Ocelot had formed a cuddling truce to warm each other up (we got more space heaters immediatly).
From that day forward Tiki and Ocelot were inseparable. Anytime Tiki went on a walk Ocelot would sit in the window and watch/yowl until she came back. Lolo would wait for Tiki to be resting and would pounce on her, all claws out, Tiki would flinch, gently shake her off, pin her down and lick her fur backwards!
Ella
Ella is our newest family member. She also was a street cat. Jordan and I realized that there was a family of cats living in a small strip of “woods” behind our last apartment. These poor cats were roaming the densely populated city eating what they could find (usually out of dumpsters). According to the neighbors, they had been around for 6 or so years. We began feeding the cats and Ella began to wait for us every day. She would see our car and pop out mewing like a mad lady. We spent hours each day trying to gain her confidence by crawling around the parking lot trying to get close enough to pet her. Once we finally got to pet her, she was hooked! Those fingers humans have are magic. Jordan specifically had the best pets! Again we spent hours each day petting and talking to Ella trying to convince her to come inside. As summer faded into fall we became increasinly distressed that Ella would become sick as the colony of cats disowned her for hanging out with the humans. We persisted trying each day to get her inside, quickly discovering that she was terrified of boxes due to her experience with the feral spay and neuter program. Fall became winter and the weather man was predicting lots of snow. We decided to just go for it. Jordan put on his thickest jacket, we gave her a few minutes to get comfortable and then Jordan picked her up tucked her under his arm, held on as tightly as safe and ran for the door. 3 doors, a lobby, and a hallway later she was inside and safe. It snowed 4 inches that night and another 6 inches the next night.
Chucky AKA CHONKY!
When the whole family moved to Idaho to help out a family friend we moved in with a cat name Chucky. Chucky has become an honorary member of the family.
He was overwhelmed to have his family grow so quickly, but quickly began to try and court Ocelot by following her around and being as close to her as she would allow (she was and is still not interested, she is strong independent lady). Ella was not even interested in him and spent a bit of time chasing him around swatting him on the butt! While it seems like Chonky got the short end of the stick he in fact has settled into his role of honorary family member and sucks up all the attention he can get, which is quite a lot since he roams around shouting at us all day. He sounds just like Yzma from The Emperors New Groove.
This vocal little man is loving his new family and even loves Valory as he has figured out he can bully Valory for her food and couch spots.
